Munich

The whole reason we went to Europe to begin with was to end up at Oktoberfest.

One of my best friends was celebrating her 40th birthday there, so it was a no brainer to join. Before we get to the main star, however, let's talk about Munich.

Getting There

From Venice, we took an overnight train to Munich. You also have the choice of taking a short flight. If I did it again, I'd definitely go with the flight. We wanted the experience of the overnight train, so we opted for that this go round. This train was not Italo as we had taken before. We took the Nightjet by OBB. We had our own little room with bunk beds.

It was quaint, but comfortable. They provide a small bag of goodies for the trip and a ticket to fill out with what type of breakfast you want.

But we could not sleep. I don't think I got a wink of sleep. It wasn't too loud or anything, it just had some movement and noises that prevented me from being able to sleep. Once we crossed into Germany, we had to stop and show our passports. We arrived at Munich Central Station around 6 am.

Where We Stayed

When I booked the hotel, I wanted something close to Oktoberfest. They do have the U-Bahn and S-Bahn to get you around the city, but walking was pretty easy for us. Getting off the Nightjet, we grabbed our bags and walked to our hotel- Hotel Andra Munchen. I'm pretty sure everyone staying at the hotel was there for Oktoberfest, and I'm sure that's true for all hotels in the area. They had no open rooms when we arrived (which I wasn't expecting), so we just dropped off our bags and kind of wandered around the city hoping for the room to open up soon so we could get some rest.

Marienplatz and Glockenspiel

While there's plenty to explore in and near Munich, we really just stayed in the heart of the city. We headed to the Marienplatz to find some breakfast and check out the Glockenspiel

Every day at 11 am, 12 pm, and 5 pm (seasonally), the Glockenspiel show will start and last around 15 minutes. We hung around to see the show, along with a lot of others, before heading back to the hotel.

Beer Halls

There are some great beer halls around Munich. We decided to check out some of the well known ones. And even though they were very busy, being just 2 of us we were able to snag a seat and check them out.

I have never heard Take Me Home, Country Roads more than in the few days we were in Munich. They love that song!

Munich is cool; it definitely has that big city feel. Oktoberfest was the purpose of this stay, and that post will be up next!
